OVERVIEW

Emergent Studios refreshed the IUCN Vital Sites logo to create a more dynamic and visually engaging identity while maintaining alignment with the initiative’s conservation mission. PROJECT DETAILS

Client: International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN)

Location: Remote

Date: 2025

Services Provided: Logo refresh, simplified brand guidelines and assets, modified logo for the IUCN World Conservation Congress 2025

DESIGN APPROACH

The project focused on evolving the Vital Sites brand to be more visually engaging and adaptable while ensuring it remained consistent with the initiative’s identity and aligned with communications for the World Conservation Congress 2025. Activities included:

Refreshed the Vital Sites logo to create a more vibrant and engaging visual identity while maintaining alignment with the original design and core brand elements. The new logo kept the aspect of a beating lifeline, but added in people (red "i" in the logo) and nature (green grass representing the "t") to more adequately represent the human-nature component of conservation.

Developed an updated colour palette and typography system to improve visual clarity, flexibility, and usability across digital and print formats.

Created simplified brand guidelines to support staff and partners in consistently communicating about Vital Sites across presentations, reports, and outreach materials.

Designed a special logo variation for the lead-up to the World Conservation Congress 2025, incorporating Abu Dhabi’s iconic Arabian oryx and adapting the colour palette to align with the WCC visual identity while maintaining the recognizable structure of the Vital Sites brand.

outcome

The refreshed visual identity was widely adopted across Vital Sites communications in the lead-up to the World Conservation Congress 2025. The updated logo and brand elements were used across a range of materials, including promotional communications and summary reports from the Vital Sites seminar series, helping create a more cohesive and recognizable visual presence.
