Our Story
Born From a Love of Science and Artistic Expression
Emergent Studios was founded in 2023 by Danielle Derrick, a marine biologist who recognised the critical gap between research and our audience’s understanding of it. After years of watching strong academic and scientific work fail to reach wider audiences and decision makers due to dense and ambiguous academic language, she knew something had to change.
What started as small side projects of creating infographics for her own science and research, slowly expanded to supporting colleagues with graphical abstracts and infographics, and eventually to supporting organisations like IUCN and Fisheries and Oceans Canada with in-house design support for reports, pavilions, and conferences.
Today, we’re proud to work with leading conservation institutions, academics, researchers, and educators worldwide.
Behind the Name
It took a long time to land upon a name that felt like it accurately captured the ethos behind the organisation. It wasn’t until Danielle was reading a short story from the book All We Can Save by Ayana Elizabeth Johnson and Katherine K. Wilkinson that she felt truly inspired. The short story is called “What is Emergent Strategy” by Adrienne Marie Brown. The author’s poetic prose is what first drew her in, but it was the underlying story that eventually led to the name Emergent Studios.
Adrienne talks about emergence as an ever evolving state of being, always changing, always adapting, always influencing. Emergence exists everywhere, in nature, at home, and in our own communities. You see, “Emergence is beyond what the sum of its parts could even imagine…/A group of caterpillars or nymphs might not see flight in their future, but it’s inevitable…/Dandelions don’t know whether they are a weed or brilliance. But each seed can create a field of dandelions. We are invited to be that prolific.../Emergence is a system that makes use of everything in the interactive process.”
In essence, abundance appears only when we allow ourselves to be fully seen and expressed through our creative selves even though the future is unknown. That’s a powerful call forward. “We are constantly impacting and changing our civilizations - each other, ourselves, intimates, strangers. And we are working to transform a world that is, by its very nature, in a constant state of change…/Many of us have been socialized to understand that constant growth, violent competition, and critical mass are the ways to create change. But emergence shows us that adaptation and evolution depend more upon critical, deep, and authentic connections, a thread that can be tugged for support and resilience.” And that is where the name Emergent Studios was born.
Emergent Studios is a place of connection, whether that is between people, science, or the unspoken word through art. It is a place that requires us to continually ask, how can we create something that will allow for connection, for a deeper understanding of the world in which we live in, and for the opportunity to evolve and grow as individuals, a community, and a collective? Questions we ask ourselves every time we put pen to paper at Emergent Studios.

The Team
Meet The Person Behind The Work
Danielle Derrick (part-time scientist, artist, and mountain runner) is the founder and principal designer behind Emergent Studios. With a background in science and a lifelong love of art, she brings together analytical thinking and creative storytelling to help communicate complex ideas clearly and beautifully. Danielle works closely with researchers, organizations, and mission-driven teams to transform data, science, and environmental knowledge into visuals that inform, connect, and inspire action.

Outside of work, she loves trail running, camping, painting and mixed media art, and partaking in anything that gets her out into nature and the outdoors.
