Report and Infographic Design on SEPLS and OECMs
Lead designer for a PDF-ready report and infographics exploring landscape similarities and differences and their contributions to Target 3 of the Global Biodiversity Framework.
OVERVIEW
Emergent Studios led the report design and infographic development for IUCN's Protected, Conserved, and Heritage Areas team on exploring the potential for socio-ecological productive landscapes and seascapes (SEPLS) to be recognized and reported as other effective area-based conservation measures (OECMs). The project also built out an interactive StoryMap of the report focusing on key concepts from the report to increase accessibility and engagement.
The project aimed to strengthen the International Partnership for the Satoyama Initiative (IPSI) members’ understanding of OECMs, and, in doing so, support the alignment between the IPSI Strategy and Plan of Action 2023–2030 and GBF Target 3. The design of both the report and infographics focused on ensuring content was approachable, accessible, and engaging to a diverse audience.

DESIGN APPROACH
The project focused on delivering on a few key products:
Developed a clear report structure and layout to organize content, visuals, and understanding for diverse audiences in an accessible and readable format.
Designed visual elements and infographics to help translate key ideas, themes, concepts, and messaging to support readers' understanding of key concepts.
Formatted and edited report content to improve readability and ensure consistency throughout the document.
Designed an online interactive StoryMap of the report for users to navigate, focusing on key concepts from the report and case studies that are already in practice.
Balanced visual design with written content, ensuring the report remained professional and appropriate for IPSI membership.
outcome
The final report provided a visually engaging and accessible report on SEPLS and OECMs and how they can contribute to the Global Biodiversity Framework, allowing participants to improve their understanding of one or both concepts, to view examples of these concepts put into practice in real-life, and to access further resources as desired.
The document now acts as a knowledge product supporting other documents produced by IUCN such as the "Site-level tool for identifying other effective area-based conservation measures (OECMs)" and "Guidance on other effective area-based conservation measures (OECMs)"
